CHARLOTTE — With running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve, the Panthers on Saturday promoted practice squad running back Reggie Bonnafon to the active roster for this weekend's game against the Chargers.
Bonnafon takes one of two available slots for practice squad players on the gameday roster for this week. Carolina used the same roster procedure last week to elevate defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton. This is one of Bonnafon's two available activations before he must be signed to the 53-man roster.
After entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and spending that year on the practice squad, Bonnafon played in all 16 of Carolina's games last year. He was mainly a special teams contributor, but did record 116 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown in limited offensive snaps. He also caught six passes for 57 yards.
Senior offensive assistant/running backs coach Jeff Nixon said Bonnafon should be a good complement to this week's starting running back, Mike Davis.
Kickoff between Carolina and Los Angeles is scheduled for 4:05 on Sunday.
Carolina holds a 5-1 edge in the all-time series against the Chargers.
