CHARLOTTE — The Panthers added a running back Tuesday, picking up Trenton Cannon off waivers after he was cut by the Jets on Monday.
A sixth-round pick of the Jets in the 2018 draft, Cannon appeared in all 16 games as a reserve running back as a rookie and played 19 percent of New York's offensive snaps. But the Virginia State product dealt with foot and ankle injuries last year and was placed on injured reserve Nov. 1.
Cannon, who's listed at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, had 38 carries for 113 yards with a touchdown as a rookie. He also caught 17 passes for 144 yards. He did not have any offensive touches in 2019 but did total 96 yards on five kick returns.
The Panthers roster now stands at 80 players.
