CHARLOTTE — The Panthers reportedly found their answer at safety Monday afternoon.

According to multiple reports, including from NFL Network, the Panthers agreed to terms with Raiders safety Tre'Von Moehrig on Monday. Deals can't be official until the league year begins Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Moehrig comes to Carolina after four years in Las Vegas. The 25 year old is a product of Texas Christian University and native of Spring Branch, Tex. (on the outskirts of San Antonio). Moehrig's journey into and through the NFL has seen him move around the secondary, and he'll come to Carolina as a big safety.

Can Play All Over

Moehrig was a corner throughout his high school career, before transitioning to safety once he got to TCU. By his sophomore season, he had been named All-Big 12 and as a junior, he wont the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back.

After being drafted in the second round (No. 43 overall) by the Raiders, Moehrig spent three years as a deep safety. In 2024, he was moved closer to the line of scrimmage and dominated as a run stopper, with 104 tackles.

His 87.5 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus was sixth amongst safeties and his 22 total run stops were fifth most last season in his position group.

Being closer to the ball also allowed Moehrig to be closer to the passer. He posted 13 quarterback pressures, the second-highest amongst qualifying safeties. Moehrig finished 2024 with 10 passes defended (12th among safeties) and two interceptions. The tackles and passes defended numbers were both career highs.

Versus Tampa Bay in 2024, Moehrig had three passes defended in a single game. It was the most PD's in a game by a Raiders safety since Week 10 of 2019.

A Reptile Man

As a kid, Moehrig read a book on reptiles and it started a lifelong love affair.

He's owned turtles, snakes, lizards, even a bearded dragon. Speaking with the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 2023, Moehrig shared he'd only ever been bitten once, by his first turtle.

"My turtle, the first one I got, bit me," Moehrig said. "First and last time. None of the other animals have. The turtle had a beak on it so — BOOM! — it got me, and it hung on. I had put my hand out, and it really got me. It was just hanging there, so I had to pull it off. It was not pretty. Never any of the snakes."

Later in life, he moved into snakes and has most recently owned tree boas.

A Renaissance Man

Moehrig's interests go far beyond the reptilian, though. Beginning with golf, he has picked up new hobbies each offseason. He has done some modeling work for certain fashion collections, and taken up snowboarding.

When he's inside the house, Moehrig tinkers with the electric guitar, and once posted a video playing "When You Were Young," by The Killers.

Life After the NFL

Even with such a varied life off the field, Moehrig's dream is to stay involved in the sport for the rest of his life. While at TCU, he studied interdisciplinary studies. But now when he looks ahead to life after the NFL, the safety has told reporters in the past he hopes to either be in sports broadcasting or enter coaching.

"It's easy to say now, but anything in the sports world I'd like to be in," Moehrig told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Still Has A Special Souvenir

It's the dream of most defenders in the NFL to shut down Patrick Mahomes in some way, a point of pride to do so against the three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP. While with the Raiders, Moehrig was able to play against the Chiefs and Mahomes twice a year, accumulating 36 tackles, six passes defended and one interception in those eight games.

When Moehrig intercepted Mahomes in Week 8 of the 2024 season, the ball immediately became a special souvenir.

"Any interception I try to keep afterwards because that's something you'll remember after football," Moehrig told reporters after the game, "but Patrick Mahomes a big deal, especially since they took my one last year away."
