CHARLOTTE — Willie Lampkin always knew this would be the spring his life could potentially change forever. He just didn't know it would be changing quite so much.

"Oh man, it's funny, it's cool, you know, I never thought I would be playing or trying out to play fullback," Lampkin told reporters at his pro day.

The North Carolina offensive lineman began this draft process as he finished his collegiate career, as an offensive lineman. But his size, at 5-10 and 270 pounds, caused NFL scouts and coaches to test him in a different role for the next level. Because while he is working out as guard and center, teams are also looking to move him to the backfield.

"Me being versatile that helps, you know, being on the O-line and at my size, some of the coaches that I've talked to try out fullback as well," Lampkin explained.

"But you know, it's kind of cool, you know, doing that and playing offensive line, it's kind of fun."

Lampkin arrived at UNC after a year at Coastal Carolina. The Lakeland, Fla. native was a state-champion in wrestling, boasting a 47-0 record his senior year. It's a background that has helped Lampkin on the offensive line as a tenacious blocker who can twist defenders out of contention. He's played every spot along the interior line, and helped lead the way for Omarion Hampton posting back-to-back seasons of 1,500-plus yards for the Tar Heels.

Having such an up-close look at Hampton the past two years gives Lampkin some insight into being a ball carrier, should he make the transition to fullback.

"Oh, you know, I've been watching Omarion for two years, so he helped me with the little pointers and stuff like that," laughed Lampkin. "He helped me out."

Lampkin didn't receive a combine invite, whether a matter of his size, tape or other factors. He did participate in the Senior Bowl though, an experience that Lampkin hopes made an impression on teams as he inches closer to the draft.

"It was really cool, having those interviews with the 32 teams," Lampkin said. "So it helped me, you know, understand where I was looking forward to going, who's going to draft me, who's going to sign me.

"Helped me actually paint a picture of it, you know, having those conversations with those coaches, because I've never had really conversations with them, so, you know, getting that out the way.

"The competition was amazing, you know, there were so many big name guys that I got to see, got to hang around, got to play against, and that was an amazing opportunity for me."

The next opportunity will be the NFL. And whether that is on the offensive line, as a fullback, or wherever a team needs the versatile blocker, Lampkin is ready to find the right fit.

"I just want to be in the right position," Lampkin said. "So you know, get to the right team that will allow me to use my skill set to get further. So, you know, just having a good mentality, staying focused, not looking at the outside, looking at what I control."
