CHARLOTTE — The Panthers announced their captains for the 2024 season on Wednesday, and it's a mix of the old and the new in head coach Dave Canales' first season here.

Captains were decided in a vote by players, and quarterback Bryce Young, defensive tackle Derrick Brown, linebacker Shaq Thompson, and safety Sam Franklin Jr. were chosen.

Thompson is a team captain for the fifth season, and the 2015 first-rounder has become one of the elder statesmen in the locker room.

Young is a captain for the second straight season, while Brown and Franklin were honored for the first time.

Brown made the Pro Bowl last year after setting a league record for tackles by a defensive tackle (103), earning a long-term contract extension this offseason.

Franklin, currently on injured reserve with a preseason foot injury but expected back later this season, is recognized as one of the top special teams players in the league.

Canales said he also planned to have a rotating captain on a weekly basis in addition to the four permanent captains.
