CHARLOTTE — The Panthers added some depth at needed positions Saturday, in advance of Sunday's game against the Saints.
They signed tight end Jordan Matthews to the active roster again.
He adds some help at the position since special teamer Feleipe Franks is out with a concussion, and Tommy Tremble is questionable with a back injury. That leaves just two healthy options: rookie Ja'Tavion Sanders and veteran Ian Thomas.
The move continues a roster journey for the 32-year-old Matthews.
He was released in cuts to the initial 53-man roster in late August, and signed to the practice squad the following day. He was then signed to the active roster the day after that. He was released after Week 2, and signed back to the practice squad the following day.
The team also activated cornerback Caleb Farley and wide receiver Deven Thompkins from the practice squad by standard elevation.
It's Farley's second elevation (of a maximum three) and Thompkins' first. Farley, the former Titans first-rounder, made his first appearance last week. Thompkins will make his debut, after spending time with this offensive staff last year in Tampa.
The Panthers also updated the injury report designations for five players in the practice window who have yet to be activated to the 53-man roster.
The team downgraded the following players to out this week: running back Jonathon Brooks, defensive tackle Jaden Crumedy, safety Jordan Fuller, wide receiver Adam Thielen, and outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum.
