Best of Social: Panthers legend Rodney Peete, still making plays

Rodney Peete

CHARLOTTE — Rodney Peete is still making plays, and making it look easy.

The former Panthers quarterback showed the same kind of effortless style he had on the football field in the stands at a baseball game in Japan.

Videos that flooded social media Wednesday showed him protecting his wife, actress Holly Robinson Peete, from a foul ball that came toward their seats along the third base line at the Tokyo Dome for the final game of the season-opening Dodgers-Cubs series.

Peete played the final three seasons of his 16-year NFL career here.

He was the starter in 2002, as the Panthers rebounded from a 1-15 record the previous year to go 7-9. He ceded the starting job to Jake Delhomme at halftime of the 2003 opener and continued as Delhomme's backup through the Super Bowl run that year and the 2004 season.

And he always knew what was up.

When the Panthers played the Buccaneers in November 2003, Delhomme was running out of bounds (and now it's safe to admit this) when he tried to draw a penalty against Hall of Fame safety John Lynch. "I was trying to steal a cheap 15," Delhomme said with a laugh. Lynch didn't find it amusing at the time and made it clear to Delhomme in very descriptive and colorful language that he would not forget and that payback was coming. As was customary with the Panthers and the Bucs at the time, there was some "yapping" going on among many players on the field, with Peete exchanging some words with Lynch as well.

"When I finally got back to the sidelines, Rodney was there," Delhomme recalled with a laugh. "And he said, 'You better slide your ass a little earlier next time because I am not going in that game.'"

Peete was actually drafted four times as a baseball player, in 1984 by the Toronto Blue Jays after his high school days, then again in 1988 (Oakland Athletics), 1989 (Oakland again), and 1990 (Detroit Tigers) during and after his two-sport days at Southern Cal.

Carolina is 4-4 all-time against the Patriots. The teams faced off in Super Bowl XXXVIII at the end of the 2003 season.
