CHARLOTTE — Blame the people who get paid per click and who are in too much of a hurry to make sure it's right.
There was a mild panic on social media last week that the Panthers had lost a draft pick. But breathe deeply, friends; everything's OK.
The Panthers still have a total of nine picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, with eight in the first five rounds. Just as we've told you at Panthers.com for months.
And we knew after the season ended that the top one would be No. 8 overall.
But to discern the later picks would require the league to dole out compensatory picks (which the Panthers didn't get any of and won't next year), and that didn't happen until last week.
And that's when the confusion started.
For some reason, when the league sent an internal list of picks to teams, the team-by-team slate of picks was right, but the round-by-round list included the line "4-114 Chicago from Carolina." That one got shared with the media, and shared and shared. This was a relic of a previous time, perhaps, and most likely a simple clerical error.
The Panthers still have their own fourth-rounder (No. 111) and also one from Dallas from last year's trade for wide receiver Jonathan Mingo (No. 114).
The problem was the copy-and-paste crowd; they were going to chow down upon and spit back out whatever got thrown in the trough in front of them. And perhaps people who had read here for months that the Panthers had nine picks suddenly only saw eight. Then, they did what people do on the internet. They yelled. (They weren't all as nice as Graham here.)
But relax, we've got you, as we have continued to have you.
Keeping tabs on this stuff isn't always easy. But if you make a list, and check it twice, things usually work out.
For instance, following the threads of three seventh-round picks that wound their way through four teams after a series of trades wasn't easy. However, the Chiefs own No. 226 (from Carolina), the Panthers are at No. 230 (from Arizona), and Dallas has No. 247 (from Kansas City through Carolina).
All of that's a result of trades that involved wide receivers Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Chosen Anderson (nee Robbie), and Mingo.
So, if you'd like to see a list of Panthers draft picks and how they were acquired that is trustworthy (and also loyal, brave, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent), you can click here.
Or, you can print this and hang it on your refrigerator.
