CHARLOTTE — The Panthers started the clock on two players' potential return to the field on Wednesday.

The team designated cornerback Dane Jackson and tight end Ian Thomas to return from injured reserve. They went on IR before the regular season opener.

They can practice for the next three weeks, and the Panthers can activate them at any time during that span.

"Get a new set of eyes on these guys," head coach Dave Canales said of their next steps. "We talk about competition all the time, and I love what it brings to our group just being able to get out there and play fast. Guys who are excited to get back to football, but again, they've got to be out there; they've got to handle the load. They haven't been on the field with us running our plays and all that.

"So this is a great opportunity for those guys to get rolling and for us to get a look at them."
