Shaq Thompson placed on injured reserve

Shaq Thompson 240926 Panthers Practice 1714

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers placed one of their longtime leaders and top tacklers in franchise history on injured reserve Saturday.

The team placed Shaq Thompson on IR after he suffered a torn Achilles in last week's loss to the Bengals.

Thompson has remained engaged with the team since then, checking in moments after his surgery last week to ask head coach Dave Canales how practice went.

A five-time team captain, Thompson is also fourth on the team's all-time tackle list with 741. The 2015 first-rounder trails only Luke Kuechly (1,092), Thomas Davis (1,077) and Mike Minter (771).

That leaves the roster at 52.

To add some depth for Sunday's game against the Bears, they activated outside linebacker Thomas Incoom and defensive lineman T.J. Smith from the practice squad (standard elevations).

The team also downgraded tight end Ian Thomas and cornerback Dane Jackson to out for Sunday's game. They began practicing this week as part of their returns from IR, but they were not activated to the 53-man roster. They have two more weeks to practice and can be activated at any point in that window.

Last weekend the Carolina Panthers continued their celebration of 30 Seasons by welcoming over 90 Legends back to Carolina for the team's annual Legends Weekend.
