CHARLOTTE —The Panthers have added a tight end to a room that was getting thin as training camp progressed.
The club signed veteran tight end Jacob Hollister on Sunday.
Hollister is a Wyoming alum who first entered the league in 2017, as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots. He has spent time with various clubs over the years, including the Seahawks, Bills, Jaguars, Raiders and Vikings, with multiple stops at some teams.
His two best seasons came while with the Seattle Seahawks, and much of the offensive staff that is now with the Panthers. During those two seasons, Hollister pulled in 66 receptions for 558 yards and six touchdowns.
The Panthers tight end unit has been decimated by injuries of late, and as such, has been practicing with three players the past three practices. Dave Canales has been adamant about signing another tight end as soon as possible, telling reporters on Saturday, "Really practicing with three tight ends is really iffy.
"So, we're looking, we're doing our due diligence. We have some guys that we got our eye on that we're going to try to bring in in short order because we got to be able to practice with a strong group. It's good for both sides.
"The defense needs to see multiple tight end sets, a big part of what we do. So we'll definitely be looking for somebody else to have another opportunity to show us who they are, in case we need them going forward."
In a corresponding move, the Panthers waived/injured wide receiver Devin Carter.
