CHARLOTTE — Going into a week with as few as two healthy tight ends, the Panthers added another on Wednesday.
The team signed rookie tight end Messiah Swinson off the Packers practice squad.
With Ian Thomas (calf) and Tommy Tremble (hamstring) dealing with lingering injuries, this gives them cover behind rookie Ja'Tavion Sanders and veteran Jordan Matthews heading into this week's opener against the Saints.
Swinson, an undrafted rookie from Arizona State, was released by the Packers at the initial cuts to 53 and stayed around on their practice squad.
The 6-foot-7, 259-pound Swinson was only targeted once in the preseason. During his college career with Missouri and the Sun Devils, he combined for 28 catches for 317 yards and two touchdowns.
Receiving credentials are less of a priority here, as Sanders was drafted for his potential pass-game production, and Matthews is a 236-pound converted wide receiver.
