Inside the Numbers: Panthers wide receivers Weeks 1-3

Diontae Johnson 240922 In-Game Edits at Raiders-366

CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers received some discouraging news on Tuesday, when veteran receiver Adam Thielen was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Hamstrings heal on vastly different timelines, but by being placed on IR, Thielen will be out for at least four weeks, the minimum time required on the list.

Until the veteran's return, Dave Canales and crew will turn to a bevy of other receivers, both experienced and rookies to be productive with Thielen's snaps. With that in mind, let's take a lot at the numbers: both what Thielen has provided for the offense, and what those behind him have done with their opportunities.

All stats provided are courtesy of Next Gen Stats, which tracks each players movement throughout the entire game.

Adam Thielen Raiders AP24266781968844

Adam Thielen

Routes run on passing plays: 69

Targets: 12

Receptions: 8

Yards: 109

TD/INT given up: 1/1

QB passer rating when throwing to this WR: 88.5

Percentage of time targeted on passing plays when on the field: 17.4%

Air yards per target: 9.6 yds.

Press % (percentage of time defenders line up within 3-yards of the receiver off the line of scrimmage): 17.4%

Separation (average yards of separation receiver creates from defender): 3.3 yds.

Tight window % (percentage of time the QB has thrown a pass to WR with less than 1-yard of separation from the defender): 8.3%

Top speed reached: 19.53 MPH

What it means: Thielen was often coming out of the slot, acting as a big target in the middle of the field. He was reliable, as showing by the QBR when targeted, and one of the most consistent targets around the area of the sticks. He was able to peel off his defender enough to create easier throws for the quarterback, something that speaks to his experience and years of practice. It's the latter part of his game that will be the most difficult to replace.

Diontae Johnson

Diontae Johnson

Routes run on passing plays: 86*

Targets: 26*

Receptions: 13*

Yards: 156*

TD/INT given up: 1/2

QB passer rating when throwing to this WR: 49.5

Percentage of time targeted on passing plays when on the field: 30.2%

Air yards per target: 9 yds.

Press % (percentage of time defenders line up within 3-yards of the receiver off the line of scrimmage): 31.4%

Separation (average yards of separation receiver creates from defender): 2.7 yds.

Tight window % (percentage of time the QB has thrown a pass to WR with less than 1-yard of separation from the defender): 11.5%

Top speed reached: 18.12 MPH

What it means: Since arriving, Diontae Johnson has become the primary target, whether it was Bryce Young or Andy Dalton at quarterback. That likely won't change, even with Thielen's injury, especially considering the different skill set each brings to the offense. Johnson has been more of an edge receiver, even if adjusting to gain yards after the catch over the middle. Defenders know Johnson is an artist at getting open, and have pressed him on the line over 30 percent of the time, hoping to throw off his routes. If Thielen's snaps are divided up among more receivers, it could pull attention, opening up Johnson for a bit more room at the line of scrimmage.

Xavier Legette 240922 In-Game Edits at Raiders-246

Xavier Legette

Routes run on passing plays: 57

Targets: 10

Receptions: 6

Yards: 77

TD/INT given up: 0/0

QB passer rating when throwing to this WR: 84.2

Percentage of time targeted on passing plays when on the field: 17.5%

Air yards per target: 13.4 yds.

Press % (percentage of time defenders line up within 3-yards of the receiver off the line of scrimmage): 21.1%

Separation (average yards of separation receiver creates from defender): 2.5 yds.

Tight window % (percentage of time the QB has thrown a pass to WR with less than 1-yard of separation from the defender): 20%

Top speed reached: 20.58 MPH*

What it means: As a rookie, Xavier Legette has been slowly folded in, but with Thielen out, his role could see an increase very soon. The first-rounder flashed his speed and big frame against the Raiders, pulling in tough catches and breaking away for extra yardage. While it's a different game than what Thielen has been providing, it's proven valuable already, and could grow this week. The air-yards per target and percentage of tight window throws indicate quarterbacks feel comfortable with Legette on deeper 50/50 balls. As he grows more comfortable with the speed of the game, look to see those targets increase.

Mingo 240922 In-Game Edits at Raiders-318

Jonathan Mingo

Routes run on passing plays: 63

Targets: 11

Receptions: 6

Yards: 59

TD/INT given up: 0/0

QB passer rating when throwing to this WR: 69.9

Percentage of time targeted on passing plays when on the field: 17.5%

Air yards per target: 5.6 yds.

Press % (percentage of time defenders line up within 3-yards of the receiver off the line of scrimmage): 16.1%

Separation (average yards of separation receiver creates from defender): 3.1 yds.

Tight window % (percentage of time the QB has thrown a pass to WR with less than 1-yard of separation from the defender): 18.2%

Top speed reached: 19.00 MPH

What it means: Coaches love what second-year receiver Jonathan Mingo can do, and Mingo could have the best chance to step up with Thielen out for a while. His targets are third only to Johnson and Thielen thus far. His air yards per target are on the lower end, but Mingo's speed allows him to pick up more after the catch.

David Moore AP24231058881548

David Moore

Routes run on passing plays: 17

Targets: 4

Receptions: 1

Yards: 14

TD/INT given up: 0/0

QB passer rating when throwing to this WR: 41.7

Percentage of time targeted on passing plays when on the field: 23.5%

Air yards per target: 1.7 yds.

Press % (percentage of time defenders line up within 3-yards of the receiver off the line of scrimmage): 41.2%

Separation (average yards of separation receiver creates from defender): 4.5 yds.

Tight window % (percentage of time the QB has thrown a pass to WR with less than 1-yard of separation from the defender): 25%

What it means: Moore is primarily a special teams player, but his quick and twitchy game makes him an intriguing option for Dalton as well. He has a history of making big plays downfield when called upon.
