CHARLOTTE — A look inside the numbers from Sunday's 26-3 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
- Running back Chuba Hubbard averaged 6.4 yards per rush against the Chargers (10 rushes for 64 yards). It's best average yards per run since Week 2 of the 2023 season (two rushes for 16 yards, averaging 8.0 ypc) and his best since Week 15 of the 2022 season, when carrying more than twice. In that win against the Detroit Lions, Hubbard averaged 10.42 per carry (12 rushes for 125 yards).
- Receiver Adam Thielen reached 400 receiving first downs for his career in the fourth quarter.
- Kicker Eddy Piñeiro extended his streak of consecutive field goals made at home to 32, the longest active streak in the NFL and the second-longest streak in Panthers history. His 38-yarder in the third quarter also marked his 60th successful field goal in a Panthers uniform. Only John Kasay (351) and Graham Gano (165) have more.
- Corner Jaycee Horn picked off Chargers QB Justin Herbert in the first quarter. This marked Horn's fourth interception of his career and the Panthers first interception of the season.
- Outside linebacker DJ Johnson and defensive tackle Jayden Peevy both got to Chargers QB Justin Herbert to share a strip sack, forcing the Panthers second turnover of the game. This marked both Johnson's first sack of his career and Peevy's first sack and forced fumble. Linebacker Josey Jewell recovered the fumble, the eighth recovery of his career.
- Linebacker Shaq Thompson had 14 tackles on Sunday, the highest in his career, now in it's 10th year.
- Linebacker Josey Jewell finished with 11 tackles, his most since Week 12 of the 2022 season. That season, Jewell played under defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
Snap Counts
Take a look at the snap counts and playtime percentage for the Panthers in Week 2 of the regular season against the Chargers.
Player | Offensive Snaps | Special Teams Snaps |
---|---|---|
Damien Lewis | 48 (100%) | 1 (4%) |
Ikem Ekwonu | 48 (100%) | 1 (4%) |
Robert Hunt | 48 (100%) | 1 (4%) |
Taylor Moton | 48 (100%) | 1 (4%) |
Austin Corbett | 48 (100%) | |
Bryce Young | 48 (100%) | |
Adam Thielen | 45 (94%) | |
Diontae Johnson | 45 (94%) | |
Jonathan Mingo | 30 (62%) | 6 (25%) |
Chuba Hubbard | 28 (58%) | |
Ja'Tavion Sanders | 24 (50%) | 7 (29%) |
Tommy Tremble | 22 (46%) | |
Xavier Legette | 20 (42%) | 6 (25%) |
Miles Sanders | 20 (42%) | |
Jordan Matthews | 4 (8%) | 13 (54%) |
David Moore | 2 (4%) | 9 (38%) |
- The first thing that jumps out at you is that the starting offense only played 48 snaps. That's a product of converting just 1-of-12 third downs and not being on the field nearly enough.
- That said, the entire offensive line took all 48, creating the kind of cohesion a new group needs. It's something, at least. Likewise, receivers Adam Thielen and Diontae Johnson each played 45 snaps.
- They'd like to use a lot of different personnel groups and formations, but the limited inventory of snaps prevented some of that. So there was some either/or with Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, as well as Jonathan Mingo and Xavier Legette.
Player | Defensive Snaps | Special Teams Snaps |
---|---|---|
Jaycee Horn | 69 (100%) | 5 (21%) |
Mike Jackson | 69 (100%) | 5 (21%) |
Shaq Thompson | 69 (100%) | 5 (21%) |
Xavier Woods | 69 (100%) | |
Josey Jewell | 69 (100%) | |
Jordan Fuller | 69 (100%) | |
A'Shawn Robinson | 41 (59%) | 6 (25%) |
Nick Thurman | 40 (58%) | 4 (17%) |
Shy Tuttle | 40 (58%) | 1 (4%) |
Jadeveon Clowney | 40 (58%) | |
DJ Johnson | 38 (55%) | |
Charles Harris | 34 (49%) | 7 (29%) |
LaBryan Ray | 32 (46%) | 5 (21%) |
Jayden Peevy | 27 (39%) | 7 (29%) |
Troy Hill | 27 (39%) | |
Eku Leota | 26 (38%) | 10 (42%) |
- The Chargers forced them into very much of a base defense game, and the need to play a lot of run defense kept them in the standard look. Nickel corner Troy Hill being in for 39 percent of the snaps was significantly off the 50 percent he played last season as a whole and last week.
- There is no replacement for Derrick Brown in terms of impact or snaps. Brown, placed on IR last week with a season-ending knee injury, was a guy you could write down for 90 percent of the snaps every week. Nick Thurman started in his place and played 58 percent, which is a more normal allotment for people that size.
- The starting secondary and the inside linebackers all played all 69 snaps.
Player | Special Teams Snaps |
---|---|
Lonnie Johnson | 23 (96%) |
Nick Scott | 21 (88%) |
Trevin Wallace | 18 (75%) |
Jon Rhattigan | 18 (75) |
Feleipe Franks | 18 (75%) |
Claudin Cherelus | 18 (75%) |
Jammie Robinson | 10 (42%) |
Raheem Blackshear | 9 (38%) |
Johnny Hekker | 8 (33%) |
JJ Jansen | 8 (33%) |
Tariq Castro-Fields | 5 (21%) |
Eddy Piñeiro | 3 (12%) |
Chandler Zavala | 1 (4%) |
Brady Christensen | 1 (4%) |
Yosh Nijman | 1 (4%) |
- You're starting to see who the core of the special teams units are, with Lonnie Johnson and Nick Scott each playing over 20 snaps and Trevin Wallace, Jon Rhattigan, Feleipe Franks, and Claudin Cherelus not far behind. Of course, the punt team and kick return teams are disproportionately represented based on the way the game went.
- You can tell the game went the wrong way when kick returner Raheem Blackshear had three times the snaps as kicker Eddy Piñeiro, and the extra blockers for kicks (including Chandler Zavala, Brady Christensen, and Yosh Nijman) only had one each.
