Inside the Numbers: Panthers 2024 Individual Milestones

The 2024 season saw both highs and lows for the Carolina Panthers. The club went 5-12 in Dave Canales' first season, but the back half of the schedule featured a quarterback who found his groove, a running back hitting 1,000-plus yards and a kick returner lead multiple categories, just to name a few.

Before attention completely turns to building the 2025 Panthers', we revisit the 2024 records and milestones set this past year.

OFFENSE

  • Bryce Young became the first quarterback since Cam Newton to start consecutive season openers. Newton did it from 2015-2019.
  • Young tied a team record for the most combined touchdowns in a game with five (three passing, two rushing) at Atlanta in Week 18. It was previously accomplished four times by quarterback Cam Newton and once by Steve Beuerlein. On each occasion, all five of Newton's and Beuerlein's touchdowns were passing.
  • Jalen Coker set Panthers team records for the most catches and receiving yards—and tied a team record for the most receiving touchdowns in a season—by an undrafted rookie free agent with 32 catches, 478 yards and 2 touchdowns.
  • Coker posted 110 yards on 4 receptions vs. Dallas (12/15/24) to become the first Panthers rookie to have a 100-yard receiving game since D.J. Moore with 157 yards at Detroit (11/18/18).
  • His totals also ranked first among all undrafted rookies in the NFL during the 2024 season.
  • Coker completed a 19-yard pass to running back Miles Sanders at Atlanta in Week 18, becoming the first non-quarterback or punter to complete a pass for the Panthers since running back Christian McCaffrey threw a 50-yard touchdown to tight end Chris Manhertz against New Orleans in 2018.
  • Andy Dalton became only the third quarterback in team history to pass for 300 yards and multiple touchdowns in consecutive starts. He threw for 319 yards and 3 touchdowns at Las Vegas (9/22/24) after totaling 361 yards and 2 touchdowns at Seattle (9/24/23).
  • The Panthers had a 300-yard passer, 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver at Las Vegas in Week 3. Dalton threw for 319 yards on 26-of-37-passing with three touchdowns, running back Chuba Hubbard rushed for 114 yards on 21 carries, and wide receiver Dionte Johnson produced 122 yards receiving on 8 catches with one touchdown.
  • Hubbard recorded the eighth 1,000-yard rushing season in team history and first since 2019. The fourth highest total in team history, on 250 attempts with 10 touchdowns. He finished eighth in the NFL with 1,195 rushing yards.
  • Hubbard moved into a tie for fourth place in team history with seven 100-yard rushing games after compiling 100 yards four times during the 2024 season.
  • Hubbard moved into fifth place in team history with 22 rushing touchdowns after finishing the season with 10. He surpassed Stephen Davis (2003-2005) with 20 rushing touchdowns. Cam Newton (2011-2019, 2021) ranks first with 63 rushing touchdowns followed by Jonathan Stewart (2008-2017) with 51, DeAngelo Williams with 46 (2006-2014) and Christian McCaffrey (2017-2022) with 32.
  • Hubbard tied for 10th in the NFL with 72 first downs (62 rushing, 10 receiving). He ranks fifth in team history with 180 rushing first downs.
  • Offensive lineman Taylor Moton set a team record for the most consecutive games started with 104. He made his 100th consecutive start in the season opener at New Orleans (9/8/24). This streak ended when he suffered a triceps injury at Chicago (10/6/24) and did not start the next game vs. Atlanta (10/13/24). He had started every game since the beginning of the 2018 season. He now ranks third in team history with 120 consecutive games played. The team record is 260 consecutive games played by J.J. Jansen (2009-2024) followed by Jason Kayle (2001-2008) with 128.
  • Tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders set team record for the most receiving yards in a season by a rookie tight end with 342 yards on 33 catches with one touchdown.
  • Receiver Adam Thielen moved into fourth place for the most receiving yards by an undrafted free agent in NFL history with 8,311 after finishing the 2024 season with 615 yards. Thielen is one of four undrafted free agents in NFL history with 8,000 career receiving yards, along with Antonio Gates with 11,841 yards, Rod Smith with 11,389 and Wes Welker with 9,924.
  • Thielen became the third undrafted player in the common-draft era to produce 25-plus career 100-yard receiving games with 26 after posting 100 yards in two games during the 2024 season.
  • Thielen became the third undrafted player in the common-draft era to have 60 receiving touchdowns with 64 after finishing the 2024 season with five touchdown catches.

DEFENSE

  • Corner Mike Jackson tied for third in the NFL with a team-leading 17 passes defensed. He finished second on the team with two interceptions and fourth with 76 tackles.
  • Defensive end A'Shawn Robinson finished first among all defensive linemen in the NFL with 80 tackles. The total ranked third on the team. Tied for the team lead with 5.5 sacks and finished second with eight tackles for loss and eight quarterback hits.
  • It marked the second consecutive season a Panthers player led the NFL in tackles by a defensive lineman after defensive tackle Derrick Brown set a team record for the most tackles in a season by a defensive lineman with 103 in 2023.
  • Defensive lineman Shy Tuttle tied a team record for the most opponent fumble recoveries in a game with two at Denver.
  • Linebacker Trevin Wallace compiled 15 tackles at Chicago in Week 5, equaling the second most tackles in team history by a rookie. It was previously accomplished by Luke Kuechly. The team record for the most tackles in a game by a rookie is 16 by Kuechly in 2012.
  • Safety Xavier Woods played all 1,218 of the Panthers defensive snaps. He was one of two NFL players to play 100 percent of their team's regular season defensive snaps in 2024 along with Indianapolis linebacker Zaire Franklin, who played 1,156 snaps. Cornerback Mike Jackson played 1,205 defensive snaps, the second most in the NFL behind Woods.

SPECIAL TEAMS

  • Raheem Blackshear moved into third place in team history with 1,734 kickoff return yards. He finished the season with 791 kickoff return yards after accumulating 513 in 2022 and 430 in 2023. This surpassed Rod Smart (2002-2005) with 1,731 kickoff return yards. Michael Bates (1996-2000, 2002) ranks first with 5,987 kickoff return yards followed by Steve Smith (2001-2013) with 2,371.
  • Blackshear moved into first place in team history with a 26.27-yard kickoff return average on 66 returns for 1,734 yards.
  • JJ Jansen extended a team record—set each week by Jansen himself—for the most career games played to 260 total, after playing in every game for the 16th consecutive season. It's a record since joining the Panthers in 2009. Jansen became the seventh player in NFL history to play in 260 games for one franchise and the 59th player in NFL history to play in 250 career games.
  • Punter Johnny Hekker tied for fourth in the NFL this season for the fewest touchbacks with three.
  • Hekker ranks first in team history with a 47.04-yard gross punting average on 236 punts for 11,101 yards from 2022-2024.
  • Kicker Eddy Piñeiro moved into third place in team history with 80 extra points. He finished the 2024 season with 33 extra points after making 17 in 2023 and 30 in 2022.

OTHER

  • Became the first team in the Super Bowl era to win a game while gaining less than 250 yards, allowing more than 425 yards and forcing zero turnovers. Accomplished the feat vs. New Orleans in Week 9, producing 246 yards and surrendering 427 yards with 0 takeaways in a. 23-22 victory.
  • The Panthers played their second international game in team history, defeating the New York Giants, 20-17 in overtime, at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Previously beat Tampa Bay, 37-26, at Tottenham Stadium in London, England. The Panthers (2-0) are one of five teams unbeaten in international play, along with Minnesota (4-0), Kansas City (3-0), Philadelphia (2-0) and Dallas (1-0).
  • The Panthers defeated the Cardinals 36-30 in overtime on a 21-yard touchdown run by running back Chuba Hubbard at Carolina. This marked the first overtime win during the regular season in team history where Panthers scored winning points on a touchdown. The winning points in the previous six overtime victories had all come on field goals.
  • The Panthers played four overtime games during 2024 season. This equaled the most overtime games in team history, previously accomplished in 2003. In 2024, Carolina went 3-1 in four overtime games and improved all-time record in overtime to 8-13-1.
