CHARLOTTE — The Panthers remain a little thin at inside linebacker, with a couple of players at the position inactive because of injuries.
The Panthers made starter Shaq Thompson and backup Kamal Martin inactive for Sunday's game against the Vikings, as expected.
Thompson is recovering from a foot injury he picked up and played through in Dallas. He's making progress, and got out of his walking boot last week. Martin is out this week after suffering a concussion in practice.
Otherwise, their inactives included cornerback CJ Henderson, defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, defensive end Darryl Johnson, and running back Spencer Brown.
Henderson missed some practice time last week because of a shoulder issue, but didn't have a status listed on the final injury report. He had been active the previous two weeks since coming over in a trade with Jacksonville. That means veteran cornerback Rashaan Melvin is active this week instead, after he was inactive against the Eagles.
Wide receiver Shi Smith is also active for the first time this season.
The Panthers had an eventful week in terms of transactions, placing three players on injured reserve — running Christian McCaffrey, guard Deonte Brown, and punter Joseph Charlton.
They promoted punter Ryan Winslow from the practice squad to handle punts and holding for kicks duty. He had previously worked with kicker Zane Gonzalez in Cardinals camp.
