In 2023, Hill was a part of a Dolphins defense that ranked 10th in total defense, allowing just 318.3 yards per game, the first time Miami finished a season with a top 10 defense since 2010 (6th, 309.3). The Dolphins defense scored on interceptions returned for touchdowns four times this season. The last time Miami had four pick-sixes in a season was 2001. It was the second-most in the NFL this season behind only Dallas (five) and just one shy of the team record of five set in 2001. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey missed the first seven games of the 2023 season due to an injury suffered in training camp, but his presence was immediately felt when he returned, and he earned a Pro Bowl selection in his first year with Miami. In the 10 regular-season games Ramsey played, he picked off three passes, which was tied for seventh in the NFL since his return in Week 8.
Hill returned to Miami following two seasons (2021-22) as defensive coordinator for the L.A. Chargers. The 2022 Chargers finished 10-7 and made their first postseason appearance since 2018. Under Hill's tutelage, safety Derwin James Jr. and linebacker Khalil Mack each earned Pro Bowl selections and James was also named second-team All-Pro. James was the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for November after totaling 37 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception. In the final five weeks of the season, the defense ranked third in scoring and total defense and fourth in passing defense. The Chargers went 4-1 in that span and secured a spot in the postseason.
In Hill's first season leading their defense, the Chargers led the NFL in strip sacks with 11 and ranked third in the league with 19 forced fumbles. Outside linebacker Joey Bosa accounted for a league-best seven strip-sacks and earned his third-straight Pro Bowl appearance.
As the defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos (2019-20), Hill coached safety Justin Simmons to his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2020 following a career-best five-interception season. Simmons also earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2019. In 2019, Hill's secondary ranked 11th in the NFL in pass defense.
In 2018, Hill helped the Dolphins secondary become one of the best in the NFL at creating turnovers. The unit was led by cornerback Xavien Howard, who was selected to his first Pro Bowl and whose seven interceptions were tied for the most in the league. When targeted, Miami's defensive backs combined for 17 picks, good for the second-most in the NFL, and allowed a 93.1 passer rating for opposing quarterbacks, the ninth-lowest in the league. Hill also helped develop rookie safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, whose two interceptions were tied for seventh among NFL rookies while his 80 tackles (51 solo) ranked 10th.
Following a 10-year NFL career as a safety, Hill entered the collegiate coaching ranks. He spent 2015-17 seasons as the secondary coach at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2017, Hill coached two All-ACC honorees as senior cornerback Avonte Maddox earned third-team honors and junior safety Jordan Whitehead earned honorable mention. Both were selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft – Whitehead at No. 117 overall to Tampa Bay and Maddox at No. 125 overall to Philadelphia.
Hill helped Whitehead earn second-team All-ACC honors in 2016 after the sophomore totaled 65 tackles, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and an interception returned for a touchdown. Maddox was one of the ACC's most productive cornerbacks, finishing in the top five in passes defensed (fourth, 1.10 per game) and interceptions (fifth, 0.30 per game) despite battling injuries throughout the season.
During the 2015 season, Hill made a big impact mentoring Whitehead in his first year on campus. The true freshman was a consensus Freshman All-American and became the first defensive player to earn ACC Rookie of the Year honors since North Carolina's Dre Bly in 1996. Whitehead earned third-team All-ACC honors, leading the team with 109 tackles (74 solo) and totaling one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one interception and seven passes defensed.
Hill began his coaching career at Wyoming (2012-13) where he served as a graduate assistant in 2012 before he was promoted to cornerbacks coach in 2013. During his tenure there, Hill worked with safety Marqueston Huff, who earned second-team All-Mountain West honors in 2013 and was a fourth-round pick (122nd overall) by Tennessee in the 2014 NFL draft.
During his playing career, Hill played 10 NFL seasons for four different teams – Arizona (2001-04), Oakland (2005), Miami (2006-08) and Denver (2009-10). In 141 games with 114 starts, he totaled 19 interceptions during his playing career. He originally entered the league as a seventh-round pick (202nd overall) by Arizona in the 2001 NFL draft. Hill played collegiately at Michigan State, where he was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree as a senior in 2000. He earned his bachelor's degree in retail management from Michigan State in 2012.
