Week 9 Thursday Injury Report: Marquis Haynes does not practice

Marquis Haynes

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers on Thursday added defensive end Marquis Haynes Sr. to the injury report, as he did not practice with a shoulder injury.

Haynes has been effective with limited playing time this season. He's tied for the team lead with 3.0 sacks and has also made four tackles for loss. He's accomplished that in just 39 percent of Carolina's defensive snaps.

"He's a good pass rusher, and I think he's really improved as a run defender," head coach Matt Rhule said. "I think he's done a really nice job so far this year, and each week we've tried to increase his role to get him on the field more."

Safety Jeremy Chinn (knee) returned to practice in a limited capacity on Thursday after he didn't participate on Wednesday. Rhule is still taking things day-by-day with Chinn, but the fact that he practiced on Thursday is a positive sign.

Left tackle Russell Okung (calf) was limited again on Thursday. Rhule said Greg Little, Trent Scott, and Dennis Daley have all taken practice snaps at the position. Rhule noted he thought Daley had "a lot of great reps last year at left tackle."

"We have enough guys who can go in and play tackle, play left tackle to be successful," Rhule said.

Running back Christian McCaffrey continued to practice on Thursday, and barring a setback, is on track to play in Sunday’s game. Carolina has not yet moved McCaffrey to the 53-man roster. However, the club has until 4 p.m. on Saturday to do so for the running back to play against Kansas City.

Defensive tackle Zach Kerr (toe) and cornerback Corn Elder (neck) were upgraded from limited participants on Wednesday to full participants. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (neck), cornerback Donte Jackson (toe), and tight end Chris Manhertz (shoulder) were also full participants.

In Kansas City, wide receiver Sammy Watkins (hamstring) was limited for the second consecutive practice. He's missed the Chiefs' last three games.

The Chiefs also placed Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday. He has 4.5 sacks, and 12 quarterback hits this season.
