CHARLOTTE — The Panthers had enough problems on defense because of the COVID-19 outbreak this week.
Now, their best cornerback is missing for a more conventional reason.
Veteran Stephon Gilmore (groin) did not practice Wednesday. He left Sunday's game against the Buccaneers and did not return.
Without him, the Panthers were down to four healthy corners in practice: CJ Henderson, Keith Taylor Jr., Stantley Thomas-Oliver III, and practice-squader Madre Harper.
The Panthers are short-handed across the defense, with outside linebacker Haason Reddick, defensive ends Brian Burns and Marquis Haynes Sr., defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, linebacker Shaq Thompson, and cornerback Rashaan Melvin on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Also missing practice Wednesday were offensive tackle Cameron Erving (calf) and safety Kenny Robinson (illness).
Safety Juston Burris (groin) and linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. (groin) were limited in Wednesday's practice, but at this point, anyone able to walk may be pressed into service.
