When the Carolina Panthers land in Munich, Germany this week to kick off Week 10 of the NFL season, it will be the culmination of years of work growing the Deutschland fan base.
Former Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme helped establish a grassroots Panthers fan base in Germany years ago. Before Delhomme joined the Panthers and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance, he was the quarterback for the Frankfurt Galaxy, leading that team to a championship win.
"Believe it or not, the Panthers had a lot of name recognition there because of Jake and because of the championship," said Dan O'Neill, Vice President of Partnerships and Premium with Tepper Sports & Entertainment.
From Keep Pounding Tours and football clinics with legends like Luke Kuechly, Steve Smith and Mike Rucker, to hosting draft parties and draft picks live from Germany, the Panthers have established a loyal fan base in the country. The movement came after the NFL awarded the Carolina Panthers marketing rights there as part of the Global Markets Program (GMP).
The Panthers have a host of partners with boots on the ground in Germany, including Daimler Truck (Domestic and German partner), OnLocation (Domestic and German partner), Pizza Hut Germany, Mars Wrigley Germany and Dr Pepper Germany.
Alongside those partners, the Panthers are offering a variety of events and activations in Munich, bringing German and U.S. fans together.
"The fandom there is absolutely incredible, and I've seen it firsthand," O'Neill noted this week. Now the Panthers want to harness that passion.
"This is our moment. We get the whole week, all eyes in Germany will be on it, whether they're football fans or not. It is the talk of the country to be quite honest. You have to maximize that, and this is our time to gain that fandom."
