CHARLOTTE -- As the Panthers came through the bye and began their week of preparation Monday, head coach Ron Rivera met with the media and confirmed that quarterback Kyle Allen will start against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers this Sunday.
Allen has started each of Carolina's last four games, winning all four in place of Cam Newton.
"Cam is going to continue his rehab," Rivera said. "As I told you guys last week, we're not putting any pressure on Cam. He's done a great job doing the things that we've asked of him. He's gone above and beyond in terms of working with our quarterbacks and helping them along the way. He's just going to continue to do his program."
Rivera acknowledged this will be the toughest test yet for Allen, who will be up against a 49ers defense that has been dominant through six weeks.
"Yes, and not just his, but ours," Rivera said. "This is a very good football team we're going to be playing against. They're 6-0 for a reason. You put the tape on, you see a lot of good things that they do. They're very well coached. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what Kyle (Shanahan) does. I've gotten the opportunity to coach against him, I've gotten the opportunity to watch the things that he's done, and like I said, this will be a very good test for our football team."
