SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Panthers have shuffled the deck in their punting competition, signing Wofford graduate Kasey Redfern and waiving Swayze Waters.
Redfern will compete with veteran and former teammate Mike Scifres for the punting job. Redfern spent the final game of 2015 on the San Diego Chargers' practice squad and was waived by the Chargers a week ago. Scifres was San Diego's punter for 14 seasons before being waived in May.
Redfern, a native of Jamestown, N.C., was Wofford's starting punter from 2010-13, averaging 39.6 yards on 146 punts, 35 of which settled inside the 20-yard line. Redfern also attempted 19 field goals for Wofford, a skill that could come in handy during the preseason with Graham Gano the only kicker on the 90-man roster.
Redfern spent the offseason and training camp with the Jaguars in 2014 and 2015.
