Panthers sign Desean Smith, waive Pearce Slater

CHARLOTTE – The Panthers have signed rookie tight end Desean Smith, who participated as a tryout player in Carolina's rookie minicamp.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pounder posted 19 catches for 346 yards and one touchdown during his career at Louisiana State. To make room on the roster, the Panthers waived offensive tackle Pearce Slater.

Smith becomes the sixth tight end on the roster, joining Greg Olsen, Ed Dickson, Scott Simonson, Chris Manhertz and Eric Wallace.
