CHARLOTTE - The Panthers have signed 10 undrafted rookie free agents, including a pair of Cam Newton's teammates from Auburn and a cornerback with North Carolina ties.
The pick-ups include wide receiver Darvin Adams, who was Newton's leading receiver last season, and Auburn center Ryan Pugh. Adams caught 52 passes for 963 yards and seven touchdowns for the national champion Tigers in 2010. Pugh becomes the second of Newton's offensive linemen on Carolina's roster, joining seventh-round draft pick Lee Ziemba.
In addition, the Panthers signed North Carolina cornerback Kendric Burney, a native of Jacksonville, N.C. In four seasons with the Tar Heels, he recorded 11 interceptions and totaled 358 interception return yards, which rank second in Atlantic Coast Conference history.
"My hat's off to (general manager) Marty Hurney and his staff," Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said. "When college free agency opened, we went after it. We were ready and we went after specific guys. I think, honestly, we were able to sign 80 percent of the guys that we targeted.
"We had a nice list, and with the assistant coaches and Marty's staff, we were able to go out and feel good about the guys we brought in."
