Panthers offense one of the fastest in the NFL?

Curtis Samuel

It's no secret that one of the Panthers' strengths on offense is speed. It's been on display the last several years, as Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel have been listed among the fastest individual ballcarriers according to Next Gen Stats.

Last year, Carolina finished tied atop the league with four runs of at least 50 yards.

But how does the raw speed of the offense directly compare to the rest of the NFL?

NFL Media's Daniel Jeremiah did that work for us:

The above average of 4.46 is based on the posted 40-yard dash times from McCaffrey, Samuel, DJ Moore, Ian Thomas and newly signed wide receiver Robby Anderson.

Samuel has the fastest 40 of that group at 4.31, the third-fastest sprint at the 2017 NFL Combine. McCaffrey posted a time of 4.42 that year, while Moore ran a 4.42 in 2018.

But the addition of Anderson and the unique speed of Thomas catapults Carolina into the top five.

Anderson wasn't invited to the Combine, but he clocked a 4.36 at his Temple pro day in 2016. Since entering the league, Anderson has 11 touchdowns of at least 30 yards, third-most in the NFL since 2016.

Meanwhile, Thomas tied for the fastest 40-yard dash by any tight end at the 2018 Combine at 4.74. His speed at that position should cause matchup issues for defenses that will have to worry about speedy Panthers all over the field.
