CHARLOTTE — The Panthers had first chance at anyone they wanted in the waiver wire, and they used it.

The team claimed six players who were waived by their previous teams on Wednesday, a significant turnover a day after settling on an initial 53-man roster.

They claimed former Buccaneers cornerback Keenan Isaac, former Jets cornerback Shemar Bartholomew, former Washington cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, former Seahawks outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff, former Seahawks linebacker Jon Rhattigan, and former 49ers guard Jarrett Kingston.

Bringing in three new cornerbacks speaks to the emphasis on the position after trading for veteran Mike Jackson last week. In addition to starter Jaycee Horn, they also have veteran nickel Troy Hill and fifth-round rookie Chau Smith-Wade there.

The 24-year-old Isaac played in two games for the Buccaneers last season as a special teamer. He had an interception in the preseason against the Bengals.

Bartholomew, 24, is an undrafted rookie out of Georgia Southern who was here for a joint workout during training camp.

The 25-year-old Castro-Fields, a former sixth-round pick of the 49ers out of Penn State, has played in 10 games for the Commanders, with one start.

Bringing in Sheriff gives them another interesting young pass-rushing prospect. Signed midway through camp by the Seahawks, he had 3.0 sacks in three preseason games, putting him on the radar. Undrafted from South Alabama, he was in Seahawks rookie minicamp as a tryout player but wasn't immediately signed.

Rhattigan, a 25-year-old Army product, is the experienced one of the group, with 36 games played for the Seahawks (giving him familiarity with special teams coordinator Tracy Smith).

Kingston, 24, was a sixth-round pick out of Southern Cal (who also played at Washington State). He started games at both guard and tackle for the Trojans last year.

To make room for the newcomers on the roster, they waived wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette, guard Cade Mays, cornerback D'Shawn Jamison, defensive tackle Jayden Peevy, along with undrafted rookies Jalen Coker and Demani Richardson.
