CHARLOTTE — The Panthers restocked the roster Saturday before taking off for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay, making a series of moves.
In addition to the previously announced move of putting running back Chuba Hubbard on injured reserve, the team also placed rookie cornerback Chau Smith-Wade on IR Saturday. Smith-Wade had already been ruled out of this week's game.
The rookie cornerback had taken over the nickel position in recent weeks, and has started four games. He got his first career interception against the Buccaneers earlier this month.
Hubbard practiced on a limited basis Friday and was listed as questionable on the final injury report of the week. But after practice, Hubbard complained of pain, and an MRI Friday night revealed a Grade 2 calf strain, which would have kept him out of the final two games.
Hubbard rushed for a career-high 1,195 yards this season, which is sixth in the league entering Week 17. He also scored a career-best 10 touchdowns.
To replace them on the active roster, the team signed running back Mike Boone and quarterback Jack Plummer from the practice squad.
Boone and Raheem Blackshear will handle the rushing load in Hubbard's absence for the final two weeks.
Boone has played in four games this year and has seven carries for 22 yards while contributing on special teams.
Plummer, an undrafted rookie from Louisville, has spent the year on the practice squad after a strong close to the preseason. He was elevated from the practice squad for the Week 8 game at Denver after Andy Dalton was injured in a car wreck, but he did not play that week.
The team also elevated defensive end DeShawn Williams from the practice squad by standard elevation.
