SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Quarterback Cam Newton again didn't participate in throwing drills, but he did toss passes to a teammate off to the side during Tuesday's practice.
With head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion observing, Newton increased the velocity on a variety of throws to rookie wide receiver Curtis Samuel, who is still nursing a hamstring injury suffered early in camp.
Head coach Ron Rivera confirmed after practice that Newton will not play in Wednesday's preseason opener against the Houston Texans. Several other veterans will likely join him on the "inactive" list.
