SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After reporting some soreness in his throwing shoulder, quarterback Cam Newton was a spectator for passing drills during training camp practice Tuesday.
"He started warming up this morning and said he still felt a little bit sore," head coach Ron Rivera said. "Why push it? Why have him throw with a sore arm and make it worse?
"It made no sense to have him throw with a sore shoulder."
Newton was held out of some team drills during Sunday's practice, all part of what Rivera characterized as routine maintenance coming off offseason shoulder surgery.
"I don't think anything that's going on with him getting some rest or him taking some throws off is alarming by any means," tight end Greg Olsen said. "I think anybody coming off (surgery), especially a thrower – I imagine it'd be the same thing with a Major League pitcher coming back. You don't just go out there and just go rag arm and start throwing it all over the gym.
"There's a plan and when it's time for him to throw, he'll throw. When it's time for him not to throw, he'll not throw. All things just getting him ready to be ready for the opener in San Francisco – that's what everything is about, not about how Cam throws today out here."
